Bio

I am a scholar of poetry and poetics with a specialization in the premodern Japanese tradition. My current work asks what a largely-unread body of Japanese verse can tell us about how and why Japanese poets crafted their poems, and what these practices can tell us more generally about lyric poetry’s ability to make sense of the world, language, experience, and selfhood.

My ongoing book project, Difficult Realities: Poetic Countertraditions in Premodern Japan, 960–1479, looks at a transnational, translingual, and transhistorical group of poets who use inherited forms of court poetry to unconventional ends on precarious occasions of various kinds. I am also working on a number of translations of waka sequences related to this project.

My academic training is in comparative literature, and I maintain a scholarly interest in reading Japanese literature alongside Chinese, European, and Anglo-American poetry.
