We are in the process of restructuring our MA and PhD degrees. EALC will offer the MA in EALC, with options to concentrate on Language Pedagogy of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, or multidisciplinary Chinese/Japanese/Korean studies. We also offer a PhD degree in EALC, under which students can pursue PhD education in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean studies. Please keep these things in mind as you begin to prepare your application:

East Asian Languages and Cultures admits students only for Fall semester. We do not have Spring or Summer admission.
The application deadline for international applicants is December 15.
The application deadline for domestic applicants is January 1.
Admissions decisions will be mailed at the beginning of March.
We do not accept revised versions of materials that have been submitted. Please carefully review your personal statement and writing sample before submitting.
Many potential funding opportunities are available for EALC graduate students, including FLAS fellowships, AI (Assistant Instructor) positions, and PhD support packages. We encourage applicants to explore the details here.
To be considered for financial aid, international applicants must score at least the following on the TOEFL exam:
- 93 Internet Based Test (iBT)
- 580 paper based test

Graduate degrees:

MA in East Asian Studies
- MA in East Asian Studies + MBA (with the Kelley School of Business)
- MA in East Asian Studies + MPA (with the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs)
- Korean Language Pedagogy Track

MA in Chinese
- MA in Chinese, Language Pedagogy Track

MA in Japanese
- MA in Japanese, Language Pedagogy Track

PhD in Chinese

Please note: Prospective dual-degree students must apply separately to both programs.

Application Calendar

December 15:	Application deadline for international students (to allow time for additional processing)
January 1:	Application deadline for domestic students (U.S. citizens and permanent U.S. residents)
January 31:	FLAS Fellowship application deadline (U.S. citizens and permanent U.S. residents only)
February:	All complete application dossiers reviewed by the Graduate Admissions Committee
March 1:	Decision letters sent out (only acceptance letters will be sent by email)
April 15:	Deadline for applicants being offered admission to notify the department of their decision
June:	Tuition and fee costs announced by the Board of Trustees (see the Bursar's website for details).
July:	Information sent to help new students prepare to move to Bloomington
Mid- to Late August:	Orientation Week (meet with the Director of Graduate Studies, register, arrange for a student ID and a computing account, explore the library, tour the department facilities, etc.)
