Certificate Programs
The Certificate in Advanced Chinese Language and Culture is for students who wish to gain language proficiency in Mandarin Chinese along with cultural competency and regional expertise through studying abroad. The certificate is a collaboration between the East Asian Languages and Cultures department and the Chinese Flagship program. Students who participate in the certificate are able to participate in a variety of professional development activities including individual tutoring in Chinese, extracurricular activities, learning about career opportunities through guest speakers and collaboration with Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies career coaches, and participating in a semester-long Capstone year internship in mainland China or Taiwan. The certificate has the following admission requirements:
- Admittance into the Chinese Flagship Program as this is required in order to participate in the Chinese Flagship Capstone year.
- Completing at least 26 credit hours of coursework at Indiana University Bloomington and admittance into an Indiana University Bloomington School (e.x. College of Arts and Sciences, Kelley School of Business etc.).
- GPA of 3.000 or higher.
The certificate requires at least 38 credit hours* (most students will need to take at least 44 credit hours in the certificate), including the requirements listed below.
- Chinese Language.
- a. Language Each of the following or demonstrated proficiency (4 courses)**:
- EALC-C 301 Third-Year Chinese I
- EALC-C 302 Third-Year Chinese II
- EALC-C 401 Fourth-Year Chinese I
- EALC-C 402 Fourth-Year Chinese II
- b. Language through Culture. Six (6) credit hours from the following two courses:
- EALC-C 457 Chinese in Humanities
- EALC-C 467 Chinese in Social Sciences
- a. Language Each of the following or demonstrated proficiency (4 courses)**:
- Regional Studies.
- a. Introduction to East Asian Studies. One (1) course listed below:
- EALC-E 310 Introduction to East Asian Studies
- b. Cultural Studies. Two (2) courses associated with EALC-C 457 and/or EALC-C 467 from the 300-399 EALC Cultural Studies list.
- c. Elective One (1) additional course from the Regional Studies Elective list.
- a. Introduction to East Asian Studies. One (1) course listed below:
- Capstone Year. One (1) of the following for at least eight (8) credit hours:
- a. Overseas Study at Nanjing University.
- Core Courses. Each of the following courses:
- EALC-C 496 Flagship Overseas Study in China
- EALC-C 450 Chinese Writing and Rhetoric
- EALC-C 433 Foreign Study in Chinese, Fourth Year
- Internship. One (1) course listed below:
- EALC-C 498 Flagship Overseas Internship in China
- Core Courses. Each of the following courses:
- b. Overseas Study at National Taiwan University
- Core Courses. Each of the following courses:
- EALC-C 496 Flagship Overseas Study in China
- EALC-C 450 Chinese Writing and Rhetoric
- EALC-C 433 Foreign Study in Chinese, Fourth Year
- Internship One (1) course listed below:
- EALC-C 498 Flagship Overseas Internship in China
- Core Courses. Each of the following courses:
- a. Overseas Study at Nanjing University.
- GPA, Minimum Grade, and Other Requirements. Each of the following:
- At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
- At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed at the 300–499 level.
- Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the certificate.
- A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the certificate—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
- Exceptions to certificate requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
Notes
- * Language courses at the 100–299 level do not count toward the major.
- ** Students who place into EALC-C 302 or higher may need to complete additional electives to meet the minimum credit hours in the major requirement.
